Dear Gentlemen, I would like to extended my thanks to Paul Catchlove and fellow committee members for the success of 2007. I would also like to extend my appreciation and thanks to Di Taylor, Registrar, for her continued support, organisatsion and facilitation of the activities of the Association. For those who don’t know me, I graduated from St Laurence’s College in 2003. I was very actively involved in various activities when at the college and seek to continue that involvement through the St Laurence’s Old Boys Association. 2008 is also my 5 year reunion and I thought it ideal that I show my appreciation and support of the college by taking on the role as President.

Please contact me on mobile 0401 827 037 or via email Michael.Kearney@suncorp.com.au if you have any suggestions or would like to actively assist the Old Boys Committee in providing a successful alumni group for the past students of St Laurence’s College.

In peace,

Michael Kearney
2008 President

Chairmans Report – September 2008
The Trustees are proud to announce the launch of a Bequest Program.  I officially launched the Bequest Program at the “old Old Boys” luncheon at the College on 24 August.  The Bequest Program has been established to provide scholarships and bursaries for the education of boys and carers who, through no fault of their own, are in financial need at the school.  As I said at the launch, although we live in an affluent society, there were still many instances of boys in need, and this is where the Foundation is committed to continuing the work the Christian Brothers who devoted their lives to educating disadvantaged boys, often by going without themselves.  For a copy of the Bequest Program information brochure, contact me on 3004 6827 or foundation@stockwells.com.

I am delighted to announce that the Foundation’s End of Financial Year Appeal raised $43,877 with donations still coming in.  Of this, $23,430 was donated to the Brother Wilkes Memorial Fund in honour of this extraordinary man – 60 years a Christian Brother – who taught at the College from 1944-1948.  Donations to the Foundation provide scholarships and fund tuition fees for boys at the College who are less privileged.  This assistance will give those boys a solid education and open them to more opportunities for success.  The Foundation will present a cheque for $19,320 to the College for this year’s bursaries at Assembly in October.

The Trustees are seeking Old Boys or others, who have a passion and commitment to the College, to become a Trustee of the Foundation.  We see the College centenary in 2015 as the focal point to drive the Foundation’s activities forward.  To do this we need a strong and forward thinking team.  We are looking for Trustees with expertise in business, marketing, corporate governance and administration, fundraising, funds management, investment, public relations and advertising.  Should you be interested in playing a direct role, or know of someone who would be, please call me on 3004 6827 to discuss further.

The Old Boys’ Association Annual Dinner is to be held on Saturday 11 October.  The Foundation has been working closely with the Association to contact as many old boys as possible and we are hoping for a strong number of attendees at the Dinner this year.  All old boys are encouraged to attend and bring along a few old school mates as well.  If you have not received an invitation and would like more information, please call Di Taylor on 1300 661 512 or visit www.slcoldboys.com.au.

The Trustees are keen to personally meet and thank those old boys who have donated to the End of Financial Year Appeals.  We will take the opportunity to do this at a pre dinner drinks function on the evening of the Old Boys’ Association Annual Dinner.  The drinks will be co-hosted by Foundation and the Association so it will be an opportunity for those old boys to meet the Trustees and the Committee Members of the Association.  Invitations have been extended and we hope to see as many donors as possible at the drinks so we can personally recognise the contributions they have made, strengthen the old boys network and indeed spread the culture of giving established by the Christian Brothers.

Chris Skelton, an Old Boy from 1978 and a Trustee for many years, stepped down from the Foundation in May.  We acknowledge Chris’ contribution to the Foundation, particularly in the area of taxation advice, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Chairman
