This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Paul "Woody" Forrester Cup, affectionately known as the Woody Cup. When the concept was initially developed in collaboration with then Sports Master Mr Eddie Wallace, its significant impact on the College calendar was unforeseen. The Old Boys and the College now compete annually for the Woody Cup across 11 sporting disciplines. To commemorate this milestone, we have partnered with the College to commission an Honour Board, which will memorialise the winners throughout the years. The Board will be prominently displayed in the Sports Centre and will be officially unveiled at the Old Boys' Day in August. Additionally, we are pleased to introduce a new Woody Cup logo, which will be utilised to promote all associated events. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Eddie for his instrumental role in establishing this tradition. We also had the honour of naming 5 of the sports with Player of the Match medals. Congratulations to all and I know they are very honoured to have the medals named after them. You can read the full list in this Newsletter.

In addition to the diverse array of events planned throughout the year, the Committee has diligently continued its initiative to identify and document Old Boys who have served in conflicts since 1915. As previously highlighted in the Autumn Lauries Magazine, our primary focus has been on World War II. We are humbled to report that we have identified 37 Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice during this conflict. These brave individuals will be solemnly honoured and remembered during the College’s ANZAC Day commemorations. We now have records for over 500 who served in WW2.

Congratulations to our latest Hall of Fame Inductees, Jock, Kevin and Michael. Truly worthy recipients and it will be a fantastic event at the Old Boys Assembly to induct these three great gentlemen. We also have short write up of each in this Newsletter. 

In February, we welcomed the newly appointed Committee members at the AGM. Full details of the Committee are available on our website for your reference. We extend our sincere gratitude to all individuals who have volunteered their time and expertise to support the Association this year. The first semester was an eventful one, featuring the highly anticipated Old Boys and Community Concert, the first SLConX session for the year plus an array of exciting Woody Cup activities, along with the Marist Ashgrove Sports Day. August is basically Old Boy Month, with the Year Reunions, Memorial Mass, Seniors Lunch and Assembly. 

I would like to take a moment to recognise Professor Allan Layton, who this year stepped down from his position as Chair of the Old Boys' Foundation. It is with sincere appreciation that we acknowledge the outstanding contributions Allan has made to the Foundation and the invaluable support he has provided to our Association throughout his tenure. His dedication and leadership have been instrumental in advancing our collective goals, and his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future endeavours.

As Chairman of the St Laurence's Old Boys' Foundation, I would like to sincerely thank the many Old Boys, parents, grandparents and friends of the College who have supported the Foundation so generously over the past year. Your ongoing commitment allows us to continue providing a hand-up to Lauries families facing financial hardship and helps ensure boys can continue their Lauries Journey when circumstances might otherwise prevent it.

The impact of that generosity is significant. Last year, the Foundation provided a gift of $135,000 to the College to support fee-relief bursaries. That contribution represented another significant step in a journey that has now seen the Foundation provide more than $1 million to the College since 2006. Behind those figures are real families and real opportunities, with boys able to remain part of the Lauries community because others chose to give.

The Foundation remains in a strong position thanks to the generosity of our donors, careful stewardship of our funds and the commitment of our Trustees. While much of the Foundation's work happens quietly, its impact is felt every day through the opportunities it creates for students and families. Recent fundraising results and donor support continue to give us confidence for the future.

I would also like to acknowledge Professor Allan Layton (1971) for his outstanding service as Foundation Chairman over many years before passing the reins to me this year. Allan's leadership, vision and dedication over many years helped build the Foundation into what it is today. On behalf of the Trustees and the many families who have benefited from the Foundation's support, I thank Allan for his remarkable contribution. Fortunately for all of us, and me especially, Allan agreed to remain a Trustee and will continue to contribute to the Foundation in the excellent way that he does!

Finally, to every donor who has supported the Foundation, thank you again. Whether through a one-off gift, regular giving, participation in fundraising activities or a commitment to remember the Foundation in your estate planning, your generosity makes a genuine and lasting difference. Together, we are helping ensure that future generations of Lauries boys have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive within our great Lauries community.

Di Taylor | Honorary Life Member

At the Annual General Meeting this year, Di Taylor announced her retirement from the Old Boys' Association after over 3 decades of dedicated service. Di's involvement with the College community began in 1983 when her eldest son commenced in Year 5. At that time, no one could have anticipated the profound impact and significant contributions Di would make to both the College and the Old Boys' Association.

Throughout her tenure, Di actively participated in various committees, including the Parents and Friends Committee, the Art and Fete Committees and Year 11 Work Experience placements. She later joined the Association to support the House at Stephens Road (Davey Centre - St Gabriel's).

Di's commitment to the Association has been nothing short of astonishing, serving in roles ranging from bookkeeper to Registrar plus everything in between. She has also been a stalwart representative of the Association at numerous events and functions.

We are immensely grateful for Di's tireless and selfless efforts over the years. It is no exaggeration to say that the Association would not be what it is today without her invaluable contributions, connections, knowledge and genuine love for the wider Lauries community. In recognition of her outstanding service, Di was bestowed with an Honorary Life Membership of the Association several years ago. 

Di has also been a walking encyclopedia of both the College and Old Boys. Whenever in doubt, ask Di, has been the war cry. Her ability to be able to engage with Old Boys has ensured the Association survived through the tough times. 

Life of the Association will never be the same again with the constant presence of Di. While her presence will be deeply missed within the Association, her legacy will endure.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Di for her unwavering dedication and countless contributions. Thank You Di. Forever part of the Old Boys.

Damien Hansen (1984)

Damien is an Detective Inspector with the Queensland Police and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his service to the Queensland Homicide Victims' Support Group.

Sonny Smith (1988)

Sonny was appointed earlier this year to the role of Dean of Primary Years at Iona College.

Craig Stanley (1989)

Craig and partner Kylie, won the Corporate Community Contribution of the Year Award from the Isaac Regional Council with their work for QRI Services Coppabella. They have transformed Coppabella through their leadership by creating vital community spaces and improving facilities.

Ben Cannon (1990)

Ben cofounded the Voice for Victims (VFV) Foundation. Formally launched in March, the VFV was established by people with lived experience of crime, in response to the gaps in support faced by victims across Queensland. Fellow Old Boy, Dan Crowley is a Director.

Liam O'Meara (2003)

Tommy Quinlivan (2003)

Tommy was selected to represent Australia in the Men's 35 Touch Squad to compete at the upcoming Asia Pacific Seniors Touch Cup in Japan in October. 

Jack Bowen (2013)

Jack won the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight Title in May.

Jacob Brehmer (2021)

Jacob won Bronze (W3) in the Men's 17-24 Classification at the World BMX Racing Championships in July.  

Kai Klisanin (2023) 

Kai was selected to compete at the UIPM (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne) World Cup in last April.

Terrell Thorne (2024)

Terrell selected for the World U20 Athletics Championships in August. 

Luke Willian (2014)

Luke won the Elite Men's Oceania Triathlon in March. He then backed it up with a win at the Chengdu World Triathlon Cup in May.

Callum Reidy (2022)

Callum has been added to the Glasgow Warriors Rugby Squad for the United Rugby Championship (URC).

Finn Mackay (2024)

Finn competed for the Junior Wallabies at the recent World Junior Rugby Championships in Georgia. Finn captained the side in the last match against Argentina.

Tyan Prindable (2024)

Tyan has been drafted by the Collingwood Magpies in the AFL.

Reece Thompson (2025)

Reece was selected in the Allies Under 18 AFL Squad. Also in the squad is current student Cooper Hodge.

Old Boys' and Community Choir again hits the right note

Once again there was a large congregation in attendance at the Old Boys and Community Choir concert held on Monday 23 March.

The event included the Old Boys String Ensemble and the Old Boys Guitar Ensemble as well as the broader Community Choir and the Old Boys Choir.

This event is a special one on the College calendar.

It was the second time the Association Committee held its monthly meeting at the St Ignatius Parish at Toowong prior to the concert.

As usual and is fitting, thank you to Dr Young for inviting the Committee and for again arranging a wonderful concert.

Dr Young personally introduced the concert with a unique singing Aboriginal tribute. He also noted the Jesuit Priests had been conducting the parish for in excess of 100 years.

The Guitar ensemble followed with a number of lively pieces one of which had been composed especially for the event.

The congregation then sang the well known John Denver classic Country Roads.

The string ensemble performed a splendid version of another classic Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

Prior to conclusion, Acting Principal Dr Liam Herbert, paid tribute to Dr Young’s musical contribution both at the Parish and at the College.

As is traditional the concert then concluded with the school song the opening words one never forgets:

“Cheer when the black and gold

Call forth the brave and bold”

SLConX - Now into its 5th year

The SLConX series continues to offer up opportunities for Old Boys and current students to engage across a broad range of occupations. 2026 is no different. In consideration of the already demanding College calendar, we made the strategic decision to consolidate the SLConX events from three sessions to two, while maintaining the comprehensive scope and quality equivalent to our original three-event format. The sessions are now also open to first year graduate Old Boys as well.

Class of 2025 Reunion

It is always encouraging to see our newest Old Boys return to where their Lauries journey began. The Class of 2025 Reunion, held at Westcourt on Friday 12 June, provided a wonderful opportunity for classmates to reconnect, share stories and reflect on their first year beyond the College gates.

More than 70 Old Boys attended the evening, enjoying the chance to catch up with friends, revisit familiar surroundings and strengthen the bonds that were forged during their time at Lauries. Events such as these play an important role in maintaining the lifelong connection between the College and its Old Boys, while reinforcing the spirit of mateship that remains at the heart of our community.

Woody Cup Medals Naming

In commemoration of the Woody Cup's tenth anniversary, we are delighted to announce the establishment of 5 distinguished Woody Cup Medals for Cross Country, Chess, Volleyball, AFL and Touch Football. The Antony "Rat" Raiteri Medal for Cricket was our only previously named Medal.

These prestigious Medals will be presented to the outstanding student upon completion of the Woody Cup event, accompanied by a commemorative Certificate. This new initiative will commence in 2027.

John van Waterschoot (1976) Medal for Chess

John was an exemplary Old Boy who demonstrated remarkable resilience in overcoming personal physical challenges throughout his life, and we are confident he would be profoundly honoured to have the Chess Medal bear his name.

We know Ken would be very proud to have the Tennis Medal named in his honour.

Woody Cup retained by the Old Boys

With 2 sports still to be decided, the Old Boys have already retained the Woody Cup for 2026 with an unassailable 6-3 lead. Thank you to all those Old Boys who continue to support the Woody Cup, it is truly appreciated. 

Golf was added to the program this year and turned out be a great success with 3 teams of 4 going up against the best the College golfers.

Earlier in the year a new Honour Board was commissioned to recognise the annual winners of the Woody Cup. The new Board will be unveiled as part of the Reunion weekend in August and be located in the Sports Centre.  The list of previous winners is listed below.

Recently the College unveiled the magnificent new picket fence for Crawford Oval at Runcorn. As part of the drive to help fund the project, the Old Boys purchased ten palings and dedicated them to the following;

WW2 Service Record Project Update

For over 18 months now the Association has undertaken a comprehensive review of Old Boys who potentially served in World War II. During this time, we have confirmed over 500 Old Boys served. Our findings uncovered noteworthy accomplishments, including recipients of the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), Distinguished Flying Cross, the French Croix de Guerre for bravery and the Military Cross.

However, our research has also revealed a considerably greater number of Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country than we had previously documented. Plans are afoot with the College to appropriately honour their memory and legacies.  We have been compiling profiles of Old Boys which have been posted to our socials from time to time (FB and Insta).

Lest we Forget.

World War One Mystery - Can you help?

In the 1965 College Jubilee Annual it makes mention that a memorial would be built to honour those who served in both World Wars (the old Runcorn Dressing Sheds). As the College Records pre-1950 are sketchy, we have been unable to find anyone who served in WW1. If you any information which may assist please let us know at slcoldboys@slc.qld.edu.au.

Ashgrove Celebrates their Rugby and Football history

Round 4 of the AIC Winter Sports Program saw Marist Ashgrove host Lauries across the Rugby, Football, and Chess competitions. It also served as the Ashgrove Old Boys' Sports Day. In what is now a tradition, the Ashgrove Old Boys' Association extended a cordial invitation to both Lauries College and the Old Boys' Association to participate in this premier day of the winter sporting calendar.

First XV teams from the years of 1956, 1966, 1976 and 1986, along with the First XI teams from 1986 representing Marist Ashgrove, Marist Rosalie and Lauries, were cordially invited to attend this commemorative function, which was hosted in the impressively renovated Cyprian Pavilion. The Cyprian also now has a magnificent Internationals Honour Board which didn't do unnoticed by the Lauries boys. 

Thank you again to the Marist College Old Boys' Association for their gracious hospitality. It is always a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and share fond memories. 

Lauries were fortunate to have representation from all Rugby years (photos below).

For the Record the First XV lost on the bell going down 17-15 in a very high-quality match. The First XI played mid-week in front of the entire Ashgrove cohort and came away with an impressive come from behind 2-1 win in the wet. The First IV won 11-5.   

The Old Boys' were very excited to donated several road and travel cases to the College Music Department, including for guitars, piano keyboards and drums. This donation builds upon the previous donation of music stand banners last year. 

Nearly 40 SLOBS from Class of 1970 gathered at the Pineapple Hotel to catch up and celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

The special guest was Kath Marshall, mother of Steve and at 98 years old, joined in with a Guinness or three and was the star of the party. John Joseph Collins make another trip from the USA. Billy Beggs came from Italy, others from Japan and interstate, and John Aloysius Collins make it all the way from Camp Hill.

If all those wonderful teachers could see us now, I'm sure they would be happy to know all those detentions have paid off to see 40 SLOBS can still get together after 56 years.

The gathering included religious orders, publicans, politicians, navy and army commanders, doctors, dentists, headmasters, teachers, CEO's of many business and finance companies and even heads of Commonwealth and State departments, Presidents of sporting clubs and even a winner of the Melbourne Cup.

Not bad for a class who called a strike a week before final exams.

But we all agreed if it wasn't for the Christian Brothers and teachers of St Laurence’s College, we wouldn't all be here today, and on that note we had another round....

The Hernon family in Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo had 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys.

Strangely enough of the 5 children, 4 entered religious orders with one girl becoming a nun, 2 of the boys becoming Christian Brothers and the other boy a Priest.

It appears the other girl married and the one who became a nun, later left and married.

Of the boys, the priest was Fr Ivan Hernon who died on 1st January 2026 - aged 99 - and whose funeral was held on 16 January 2026.

The brothers were Br Leo Hernon who died in 2024, also aged 99 and 1 month short of reaching 100, and who is buried in Rookwood cemetery in Sydney, and Br Denis Ivan Hernon who died in 2013 at the relatively young age of 77.

The SLC connection is that Br Denis Hernon taught Grade 5 at the College's for 3 years from 1959 to 1961.

Br Hernon was a very well liked and respected member of the Christian brothers.

Finally a little anecdote:

In 1961, Bro Hernon asked my brother Greg (Class of 1967) and myself (Class of 1968) to help him trim some hedges on the footpath of his parents home on Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo, near the corner of Main Street (where the Thomas's owned the squash courts). As a reward he took us into the city to see the just-released movie "Westside Story" a romantic musical.

There’s something special about seeing the next generation of Lauries boys beginning their journey before they’ve even stepped through the College gates.

The Future Lauries Initiative invites Old Boys with sons aged 0-5 years to register their interest in a future St Laurence’s College education. It’s a simple way for families to stay connected with the College while planning ahead for the years to come.

As a welcome gift, both father and son receive a pair of exclusive Lauries socks, creating an early connection to the brotherhood that has spanned generations. We’ve loved seeing Old Boys sharing photos of their young men proudly wearing their Future Lauries socks, often alongside Dad in his matching pair.

If you have a son aged 0-5 years, now is the perfect time to register your interest HERE. At time of enquiry, please ensure you include in the father’s details under School Connections – Sons of Old Boy. Following this, a pair of socks will be shared via the post. We encourage you to help keep the Lauries tradition alive and join the growing number of Old Boys who are already looking forward to seeing the next generation walk through the gates of South Brisbane.

Applications are closing on Monday 17 August for young men wishing to commence their Lauries Education in Year 5 2028. Further information can be found HERE including links to submit an application.
